Can Cedar 3-peat?
posted to: Cedar High School July 12th, 2008
CEDAR - With Cedar football, you can etch certain things in stone:
1. They will play very hard regardless of the opponent.
2. The Redman will play classy.
3. Cedar is going to win...a bunch.
Despite losing one of their best quarterbacks and leaders in recent memory, the Redman look to make it three straight Region 9 championships in 2008 and have the tools and horses to do it. Junior Kai Eldredge looks to have his time in the football spotlight. The athletic Eldredge, who is an all-state baseball player and a solid contributor in.. (Read More)

posted to: Layton High School July 12th, 2008
LAYTON - Despite losing a number of key players from the 2007 State Runner-up Layton team, the cupboard isn't exactly bare. LaVaughn Jackson, who scored a 97-yard kickoff return is back to help this Lancer team defend their Region 5 championship and keep Layton successful.
Layton will start the season taking on Bonneville, a game heard exclusively on totalUTAHpreps.com on August 22, then take on pre-season favorite Cottonwood before battling the other Region 5 foes.

Tigers Ready to Roar
posted to: Hurricane High School July 2nd, 2008
Hurricane - Loaded. That is the word on the street around Tiger Town in 2008. This is the year the Hurricane football team has been looking forward to come football season. With its second year of split 4A/3A schedules, Hurricane hopes to not just win the 3A division, but to dominate all comers regardless of classification.
With a majority of starters back, including all-stater Ryan Butler, Hurricane feels they are in position to go deep in the playoff picture in 2008. Senior Gordie Dotson will begin his third season at.. (Read More)

While I will likely have very little in common with Tampa Bay Rays prospect Mitch Talbot, we do share this same tidbit: we have both been to one Rays game.
He didn’t pay for his ticket, I did. The Rays won both times, my game (5-2 over Toronto Blue Jays, June 26, 1999) his against the Boston Red Sox last Wednesday. Both games were played in the worst facility ever for a major league baseball game, Tropicana Field. It is dark, depressing and septic. It did host two NCAA final four games, one in 1999 and the women’s in 2008. Sad when a basketball contest in a baseball stadium is one of the highlights of one’s history
Unfortunately for the talented right hander, Talbot, who was called up to the big team from AAA Durham, was just as quickly reassigned to the Bulls following the game. He didn’t get in the game against the defending champion Red Sox.
Why ask Talbot to leave his situation with the Bulls, where he is 7-6 with a 4.41 ERA, with 17 starts, 98.0 innings, 77 strikeouts and 16 walks if you are not going to keep him for a few games? They are still short a pitcher with Troy Percival on the 15-day disabled list. They replaced Talbot’s roster positon with a shortstop.
Perhaps even a one-day visit to Tampa keeps the Talbot on the radar for manager Joe Maddon and pitching coach Jim Hickey to give Talbot another shot and let him play in the near future. It is likely Talbot will be part of the Rays 40-man roster in September, but that certainly isn’t fast enough for the Canyon View High star.
If there was any consolation prize, actor Kevin Costner was at the Bulls game Saturday, commerating the 20th anniversary of the move, “Bull Durham”. Actually that isn’t much of a consolation prize.

Former Canyon View Falcon Mitch Talbot hopes to move from his humble apartment in Durham, North Carolina and never return. The right-handed pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays got the call he has been dreaming about earlier this week and was called up from AAA Durham Bulls to the team with the best record in the Major Leagues, the Rays.
Talbot hopes to stick with the big team, but realizes this stint may be temporary. All-Star reliever Troy Percival, who was just placed on the 15-day disabled list, allowing Talbot to fill the vacancy. Talbot has been a starting pitcher throughout his minor league career, which began in 2002 with the Houston Astros organization. Moving to the bullpen will be a stretch for Talbot, who according to Baseball America has one of the best change ups pitches in all of baseball..
With the Durham Bulls, Mitch Talbot improved to 7-6 on Saturday night, allowing only one earned run in 6.2 innings in the Durham Bulls’ 6-3 victory over the Norfolk Tides. Talbot scattered six hit while striking out four, lowering his ERA to 4.41.
